Mexican National Sentenced for Distributing Meth in Twin Falls

BOISE – Sergio Duarte-Tavera, 26, a Mexican national formerly living in Nampa, Idaho, was sentenced today to 60 months in prison for distributing in excess of five grams of actual methamphetamine, U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson announced. U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill also ordered Duarte-Tavera to serve four years of supervised release following his prison term. He pleaded guilty to a superseding information on May 14, 2012.

According to the plea agreement, in May 2011, Duarte-Tavera made arrangements with another individual to sell two ounces of methamphetamine. Subsequently, at a meeting monitored by law enforcement, the two met in Twin Falls, Idaho, at a parking lot outside a large retail establishment. At the meeting, Duarte-Tavera provided the purchaser with in excess of five grams of actual methamphetamine β€œon the front,” with the promise that he would be paid at a later time. According to the plea agreement, Duarte-Tavera made these arrangements knowing he was providing methamphetamine to another person.

The case was the result of an Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration with assistance by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The OCDETF program is a federal multi-agency, multi-jurisdictional task force that supplies supplemental federal funding to federal and state agencies involved in the identification, investigation, and prosecution of major drug trafficking organizations.
