COEUR D'ALENE – Jason Patrick Day, 35, of Plummer, Idaho, was sentenced yesterday in United States District Court in Coeur d’Alene to 28 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for unlawful possession of a firearm, U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson announced. U.S. District Judge Edward J. Lodge also ordered Day to forfeit the weapon found in his possession. He pleaded guilty to the charge on September 18, 2012.

According to court documents, on March 25, 2012, Day was found in possession of a .38 special pistol during a traffic stop by an Idaho State Trooper. Day was arrested because he had concealed the firearm on his person and did not have a concealed weapons permit. Troopers later discovered that Day had a domestic violence conviction that made his possession of the firearm illegal and a violation of federal law.

The case was investigated by the Idaho State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with assistance by Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police.

The case was prosecuted as a part of Idaho's Project Safe Neighborhood Program, which seeks to reduce gun violence in Idaho.
