Pocatello Man Sentenced for Illegal Possession of Ammunition

January 25, 2012

POCATELLO – Ryan D. Walters, 33, of Pocatello, Idaho, was sentenced yesterday to 15 months in prison for possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson announced. Chief U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill also ordered Walters to serve three years of supervised release following his prison term and do 60 hours of community service. He pleaded guilty to the charge on October 25, 2011.

According to the plea agreement, on October 21, 2010, Walters was contacted by the Idaho State Police and United States Marshals at his residence regarding the whereabouts of a federal fugitive. During the interview, Walters admitted to the presence of ammunition in the home. A subsequent search of the residence uncovered numerous rounds of ammunition, including 76 rounds of 7 millimeter Remington Magnum ammunition. Walters is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition due to a prior conviction in 1997 for felony injury to a child in Bingham County, Idaho.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Idaho State Police.
