Springfield, Ill. – The U.S. Attorney for the Central District of Illinois, Rodger A. Heaton, announced that a Springfield felon has been sentenced to serve ten years in prison and a term of eight years of supervised release upon release from prison. David Haynes, of the 1900 block of Taylor Avenue, Springfield, Illinois, was sentenced on December 15, 2008, by U.S. District Judge Jeanne E. Scott.

Evidence presented at Haynes’ guilty plea hearing, on August 19, 2008, established that on March 10, 2008, Springfield police officers executed a search warrant at Haynes’ residence in Springfield. Police recovered two loaded guns, a .357 revolver and a .22 caliber revolver, and 5.1 grams of cocaine base “crack” as well as drug distribution paraphernalia. Haynes was indicted on April 1, 2008, and on April 7, 2008, was ordered detained in federal law enforcement custody following his arrest on the federal charges. Haynes has two prior felony convictions in Sangamon County: attempted manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance in 2002, and possession of a controlled substance in 1998.

The indictment resulted from a joint investigation conducted by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the Springfield Police Department, and the Illinois State Police under the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative in cooperation with the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office.
