TOPEKA, KAN. – A Wichita man has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison in connection with a shooting incident in Salina, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said today.

Danial Gene Meade, 29, Wichita, Kan., was convicted on one count of unlawful possession of a firearm after a felony conviction, one count of unlawful possession of body armor after a felony conviction, and one count of unlawful possession of ammunition after a felony conviction. Meade was convicted at the end of a jury trial that began February 14 in U.S. District Court in Topeka.

During trial, prosecutors presented evidence that on March 5, 2010, Salina police were called to a shooting incident in the 500 block of 12th Street in Salina. Investigators learned that Meade had driven several times by the home of individuals with whom Meade had an apparent dispute. During the incident approximately 28 rounds were fired in the area and Meade was apprehended shortly thereafter. His vehicle was found near the scene and contained ammunition and the carrying case for personal protective body armor. The body armor and an assault rifle were found near where Meade had abandoned his vehicle.

At the time, Meade was prohibited by federal law from possessing a firearm, ammunition or body armor because he had been convicted in 1999 in Saline County District Court on a felony charge of discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.

Grissom commended the Salina Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jared Maag for their work on the case.
