FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 31, 2011

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – More than 62,000 Kansas children are living in environments where drugs and alcohol are abused, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said today.

“Children whose parents are substance abusers are more than twice as likely to be physically abused and more than four times as likely to be neglected,” Grissom said.

Grissom joined Deputy Attorney General James Cole and the National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children in calling on communities to support programs that focus on preventing, protecting and serving children in drug endangered environments by providing resources, education, leadership and support.

“We have a very active Kansas Alliance for Drug Endangered Children,” Grissom said. “The alliance brings law enforcement, child protective services, prosecutors, medical personnel and other agencies together to help children who live in an environment where illegal drugs are manufactured, sold or distributed.”
