
Crawford County Farmer Charged
With Collecting Millions From False Tax Returns
TOPEKA, KAN. – A farmer from Crawford County, Kan., has been charged with receiving millions of dollars in tax refunds based on filing false federal tax returns, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said today.
Jerold D. Fisher, 47, Arma, Kan., is charged with one count of filing false claims. An information filed today in U.S. District Court in Topeka alleges Fisher, who was registered agent for Fisher Alfalfa Farms, prepared false tax returns both for himself and for his mother in order to receive tax refunds that were not owed to them.
For tax years 2006 through 2009, Fisher claimed he paid more than $3.9 million in federal withholding taxes on his earnings from Fisher Alfalfa Farms. In fact, the company had not filed employment tax returns nor submitted any federal withholding. As a result, he received a tax refund of more than $3.8 million.
For tax years 2008 and 2009, Fisher claimed his mother paid more than $442,000 on her earnings from Fisher Alfalfa Farms. In fact, FAF had not filed employment tax returns nor submitted any federal withholding. As a result, she received a tax refund of more than $209,000.
If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of five years and a fine up to $250,000. Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigations Division investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Rich Hathaway is prosecuting.
