LOUISVILLE, KY – A Meade County, Kentucky man has been sentenced to 30 months in prison followed by 24 months of supervised release by U.S. District Court Judge Charles R. Simpson III today, after pleading guilty to charges of possessing a destructive device which was not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record and being a user of a controlled substance in possession of a firearm, announced David J. Hale, United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky.

According to the two count indictment returned May 2, 2011, by a federal grand jury in Louisville, Kentucky, James W. Nott, age 28, of Meade County, Kentucky, possessed a combination of parts from which a destructive device could be readily assembled. Those parts included electric blasting caps, detonation cord, igniting devices, timed fuses, mercury switches, black powder primers, metal pipe with matching end caps, Tannerite-type material, aluminum powder, inert grenades and grenade components, and ammonium nitrate. Also located was a Bushmaster BAR-10 .308 calibre rifle and ammunition.

According to court records, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) was contacted by Kentucky State Police following a search warrant that had been conducted on Nott’s home located in Vine Grove, Kentucky. Nott allegedly stated in an interview that the components were his and that he had built multiple destructive devices with them in the past and that he intended to manufacture other destructive devices from the components discovered within his residence.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Thomas W. Dyke and was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Kentucky State Police and the Meade County Sheriff’s Department.
