BOWLING GREEN, KY - A federal grand jury in Bowling Green returned an indictment against Scotty Reece, age 41, of Glasgow, Kentucky, in Barren County, for felon in possession of a handgun and possession of a stolen handgun announced David J. Hale, United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky.

The two-count Indictment alleges that on October 4, 2011, Reece possessed a Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver, Model 64-5, bearing serial number BJH8483 and six rounds of Winchester .38 special hollow point ammunition while being a convicted felon. In addition, the Indictment charges Reece with possession of a stolen weapon.

Reece is a convicted felon for several previous drug related convictions. He also has several outstanding methamphetamine related warrants from the Barren County Circuit Court and Cumberland County Circuit Court. He is wanted in Sumner County, Tennessee for multiple theft charges. At least one charge accuses Reece of stealing cattle.

According to an affidavit filed in conjunction with a criminal complaint for Reece's arrest, on October 4, 2011, the U.S. Marshals Bowling Green Fugitive Task Force conducted an operation to arrest Scotty Reece. At approximately 10:55 pm law enforcement observed a vehicle picking Reece up in Oakland, Kentucky. Reece exited one vehicle and then got in the passenger seat of the female's vehicle and they proceeded down the road. Shortly, thereafter, Kentucky State Police initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle based on probable cause that Scotty Reece, an individual with an outstanding warrant, was in the vehicle. Kentucky State Police attempted to block the passenger door with their cruiser; however, Reece was able to exit the vehicle and it’s alleged that Reece slid across the hood of the cruiser while brandishing a firearm at the trooper. While inside his cruiser the trooper fired several rounds and struck Reece. Reece was taken into custody by several officers a short distance from the cruiser and transported for medical treatment. A loaded Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver, was recovered near where Reece was taken into custody. The firearm was loaded with 6 rounds of Winchester .38 special hollow point ammunition.

As the affidavit explains, criminal records indicate Reece has at least two felony convictions, (1) Metcalfe County Circuit Court Case # 99-CR-0007 - Complicity to Trafficking in a Controlled Substance - 2nd degree, where Reece received 5 years prison; and (2) Barren County Circuit Court Case # 06-CR-00348 – Possession of a controlled substance - 1st degree (methamphetamine), where REECE received 3 years prison. According to criminal records, Reece also has an outstanding warrant from Barren Circuit Court Case # 10-CR-00283 – Manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of anhydrous ammonia in unapproved container, convicted felon in possession of handgun, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia, and an outstanding warrant from Cumberland County Circuit Court Case # 11-CR-0001 – unlawful possession of meth precursor, failure to maintain insurance, reckless driving, none or expired registration plates, and possession of controlled substance-1st degree - 2nd offense.

If convicted, Reece faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $500,000 and no more than 3 years of supervised release. He is currently being held in the Sumner County, Tennessee Jail.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Joshua Judd, and it was investigated by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
