LOUISVILLE, Ky. – David J. Hale, United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky announced the hiring of Brett Hightower as Law Enforcement Coordinator, during a swearing-in ceremony, held in Louisville Monday afternoon, at the headquarters for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. In attendance were federal, state and local law enforcement officials.

“Brett’s experiences and training in law enforcement and the Army National Guard along with his commitment to public service have prepared him well for the challenges of this position,” announced U.S. Attorney Hale. “We are fortunate to have a Law Enforcement Coordinator with this breadth of experience. We know Brett will make a substantial contribution to our strategy of improved collaboration among federal, state and local law enforcement in the district.”

Hightower will work closely with established law enforcement partners of the U.S. Attorney’s Office and continue to build relationships with law enforcement agencies across the 53 counties of the western district of Kentucky. Hightower will develop and coordinate law enforcement training conferences, and serve as a liaison with state and local police organizations as well as community based organizations to enhance the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s outreach efforts. Hightower will advise U.S. Attorney Hale and on law enforcement issues, including issues important to priority programs such as Project Safe Neighborhood and Project Safe Childhood. Hightower will also assist with the many collaborative projects between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and Fort Knox and Fort Campbell.

Hightower is an experienced policeman, having served for over 17 years with the Bowling Green Police Department, where he retired in 2011, as a Captain. During his career at the BGPD, Hightower progressed through the ranks from patrol officer to supervisor to shift commander, sergeant and captain. His broad experiences include leading the BGPD’s critical response team, coordinating with the City Attorney on policies and procedures, coordinating training seminars and community awareness programs, and leading a team that developed an intelligence-driven model to better focus police resources.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Doug Hawkins, Chief of Police for the BGPD commented on Hightower’s exceptional qualifications to work in the U.S. Attorney’s Office. “Not only is Brett a true military hero and dedicated law enforcement officer, Brett has the unique ability to create friendships and partnerships. This made him invaluable as Captain with the Bowling Green Police Department and is an attribute that will benefit communities throughout the western district of Kentucky.”

Hightower retired from the Army National Guard as a Master Sergeant. His exceptional service includes overseas deployments to Bosnia in 2002, and more recently in 2007, to Afghanistan. Among many commendations, Hightower was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Following his retirement, Hightower worked for the Army Wounded Warrior Program at Fort Knox where he coordinated services for returning soldiers and their families. In attendance from Fort Knox were Staff Judge Advocate COL Chris Frederickson and Army CID Special-Agent-in-Charge Jason Day.
