WOMAN PLEADS GUILTY TO BANK THEFT
ELVIRA MITCHELL, age 42, of New Orleans, Louisiana, pled guilty in federal court yesterday before U.S. District Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon to bank theft, announced United States Attorney Jim Letten.
According to court documents, MITCHELL stole approximately $3,375.86 from the New Orleans Firemen’s Federal Credit Union (NOFFCU) between August 29, 2005 and September 6, 2006. In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, NOFFCU suffered a computer malfunction that allowed unfettered access to cash for NOFFCU account holders through ATM machines. Knowing this, MITCHELL intentionally overdrew her NOFFCU account by $3,375.86.
MITCHELL faces a maximum term of imprisonment of ten (10) years, a fine of $250,000.00 and three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment. MITCHELL is set for sentencing on April 22, 2010.
The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney G. Dall Kammer.
