FEDERAL GRAND JURY INDICTS CONVICTED FELON FOR FIREARM VIOLATION
OLIN DEREK GRANT, age 43, a resident of New Orleans, was charged in a one-count indictment by a Federal Grand Jury for possession of a firearm by convicted felons, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to the Indictment, GRANT is charged with possessing a Smith & Wesson Model 500 Magnum Hunter, .500 S&W Magnum caliber revolver after having been convicted in the 24th Judicial District Court for the Parish of Jefferson of: Manslaughter on May 7, 1982, under Case Number 81-3950 “J;” Burglary of an Inhabited Dwelling and Attempted Simple Burglary of an Inhabited Dwelling on April 7, 1999, under Case Number 98-7242 “H;”and Distribution of Cocaine on March 14, 2000, also under Case Number 98-7242 “H.”
If convicted, GRANT faces a maximum term of imprisonment of ten (10) years, a maximum fine of the greater of $250,000 or twice the gross loss to any victim or twice the gross gain to the defendant, and up to three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendants must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The investigation was conducted by Special Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Christopher Cox of the Violent Crime Unit.
