ORLEANS PARISH MAN PLEADS GUILTY IN FEDERAL COURT TO WEAPONS CHARGE
KENTRELL WASHINGTON, age 27, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, pled guilty in federal court yesterday before U. S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance to illegally possessing a firearm, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to documents filed in federal court, on June 16, 2009, NOPD detectives conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in which WASHINGTON was the sole back seat passenger. During the subsequent investigation, law enforcement located a plastic bag of marijuana located on the back passenger seat as well as a 9 mm Beretta pistol on the on the backseat floorboard. WASHINGTON also admitted that he has a June 2006 conviction for the manufacture/delivery of a controlled dangerous substance in Houston, Texas. As a convicted felon, WASHINGTON is precluded from possessing any firearms.
WASHINGTON faces a possible maximum sentence of ten (10) years imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, three (3) years of supervised release and forfeiture of the firearm. Sentencing has been scheduled for May 10, 2010.
This case was investigated by the New Orleans Police Department along with Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Rick Veters of the Violent Crime Unit.
