HARVEY MAN SENTENCED TO 4 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR WEAPONS VIOLATION
JONATHAN MANUEL, age 21, a resident of Harvey, Louisiana, was sentenced yesterday in federal court by U. S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey to four (4) years (48 months) in prison for illegally possessing a firearm in New Orleans, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Zainey ordered that MANUEL be placed on three (3) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment, during which time the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of his supervised release.
Court documents show that MANUEL pled guilty on September 21, 2010. According to the factual basis, NOPD officers were flagged down by concerned citizens after they observed the occupants of two vehicles exchanging gun fire as they drove down the 3000 block of Destrehan Avenue. During the follow-up investigation, NOPD officers located one of the vehicles and observed the passenger flee on foot carrying a purse. After canvassing the area, officers located a Glock 9mm gun and the purse. Subsequent investigation revealed MANUEL was the passenger of the vehicle. Thereafter, officers located MANUEL and arrested him. MANUEL also admitted he was a convicted felon.
This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the New Orleans Police Department and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Rick Veters of the Violent Crime Unit.
