NEW ORLEANS MAN SENTENCED FOR TWO BANK ROBBERIES, DRUG CONSPIRACY AND OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE
GERARD A. JACKSON, JR, age 44, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced today in federal court by United States District Judge Carl J. Barbier to twenty-two years (264 months) for his role in two bank robberies, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, and obstruction of justice, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Barbier imposed eight (8) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment, during which time the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of his supervised release.
JACKSON was sentenced having been convicted by a federal jury of the June 11, 2009 armed robbery of the ASI Federal Credit Union on Louisiana Avenue; the July 1, 2009 robbery of the Capital One Bank on St. Charles Avenue; conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine 500 grams to less than 5 kilograms in New Orleans during 2008 and 2009; and possession with intent to distribute 500 grams to 5 kilograms of cocaine in February 2009, which he stole from his Lafayette source and fled to New Orleans. Additionally, JACKSON was sentenced for attempting to conceal a material fact from law enforcement regarding the ASI Federal Credit Union Robbery by having his girlfriend report to the FBI that her car, which was used as the getaway vehicle, was stolen. After JACKSON’s arrest for the bank robberies, he attempted to get others to provide a false alibi showing he was working in Lafayette, Louisiana on the dates of the two bank robberies.
JACKSON, who has a prior drug conviction, was sentenced to concurrent terms of 60 and 120 months for his drug counts of conviction; a concurrent term of 180 months for the ASI Federal Credit Union robbery and a consecutive sentence of 84 months for brandishing his firearm. For the Capital One bank robbery JACKSON was sentenced to a concurrent term of 180 months. Finally, JACKSON was sentenced to concurrent terms of 60 months for covering up his robbery by trick and scheme and 120 months for his obstruction of justice which occurred after being indicted federally.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution was handled by Assistant U. S. Attorneys Tony Gordon Sanders and Rick Veters.
