MARIA SAMUELS, age 32, was sentenced today by U. S. District Court Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon to the maximum sentence of five years (60 months) imprisonment for her involvement in a 2003-2004 insurance murder fraud. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Lemmon imposed two (2) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment, during which time the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should she violate any terms of his supervised release.

Maria Samuels had pleaded guilty on the first day of a federal jury trial which found David Samuels, Jermaine Surtain, and Charles Moss guilty of a multi-count indictment.

Maria Samuels pleaded guilty to conspiracy to devise a scheme to defraud two life insurance companies by obtaining in 2003 fraudulent life insurance policies on Treyor August, the victim, and then participating in attempting to collect on one of those policies taken out in her name in 2004.

The case resulted from a two year investigation by the New Orleans Police Department ATF Task Force and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Tony Gordon Sanders, Bill McSherry and Michael E. McMahon.
