BROCKTON MAN CONVICTED OF BEING A FELON IN POSSESSION OF A FIREARM AND AMMUNITION
BOSTON, Mass. - A Brockton man was convicted today in federal court of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz; James C. Burrell, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation - Boston Division; Eugenio A. Marquez, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - Boston Field Division; Colonel Marian J. McGovern, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police; and Chief William K. Conlon of the Brockton Police Department announced today that NADIR CABRAL, 24, of Brockton, was convicted by a jury sitting before U.S. District Judge Patti B. Saris of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Evidence presented during the four-day trial proved that on the evening of August 18, 2009, members of the Massachusetts State Police were driving an unmarked cruiser on Exchange Street in Brockton when they encountered a group of individuals, including CABRAL. The Troopers observed CABRAL engage in suspicious actions consistent with CABRAL attempting to discard a pistol. The Troopers subsequently recovered a loaded .25 caliber semi-automatic pistol laying under a parked car that CABRAL had approached.
Judge Saris scheduled sentencing for October 7, 2010. CABRAL faces a prison term of up to 10 years, to be followed by up to 3 years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Massachusetts State Police and the Brockton Police Department. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lisa M. Asiaf and Michael J. Crowley of the U.S. Attorney’s Major Crimes Unit.
