BOSTON, Mass. - A Fitchburg man arrested last year in connection with a investigation targeting drug and gun trafficking crimes, was convicted today of selling crack cocaine.

United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz; Steven Derr, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration - Boston Field Division; Warren Bamford, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; Colonel Marian McGovern, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police and Chief Robert A. DeMoura of the Fitchburg Police Department announced today that ANGEL MOLINA, 26, of Fitchburg, pled guilty before U.S. District Judge F. Dennis Saylor, IV to two counts of distributing crack cocaine.

At today’s plea hearing, the prosecutor told the Court that had the case proceeded to trial the Government’s evidence would have proven that on July 16, 2009, MOLINA sold an informant 27.9 grams of crack cocaine in exchange for $1,100. On August 31, 2009, MOLINA again sold the informant 27.9 grams of crack cocaine in exchange for $1,150, which was video recorded capturing MOLINA handing a package that contained the crack cocaine to the informant and receiving cash in exchange.

MOLINA was arrested in connection with a larger investigation known as “Northern Kings” which targeted drug and gun trafficking crimes committed by persons belonging to or associated with street gangs. The investigation resulted in over 20 federal and state arrests, in which nine defendants were indicted in federal court; one pled guilty and was sentenced to five years’ incarceration; and the remaining federal defendants are facing trial.

Judge Saylor scheduled sentencing for September 1, 2010. MOLINA faces up to 40 years imprisonment, to be followed by four years of supervised release and a $ 2 million fine.

The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Worcester HIDTA Team. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David Hennessy of Ortiz’s Worcester Branch Office.
