FORMER BOSTON MAN CONVICTED OF FAILING TO REPORT TO PRISON
BOSTON, Mass. - A Bradford man, formerly of Boston, was convicted today of failing to surrender to serve his prison sentence.
United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz, Susan Dukes, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigations, Boston Field Division and Warren Bamford, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation - Boston Field Division, announced today that CHUONG VAN DUONG, 62, of Bradford, Mass., was convicted after a bench trial before U.S. District Judge Douglas P. Woodlock of failing to report to prison to serve his sentence as ordered.
In May 2009, following a one day trial, DUONG was sentenced by a federal judge in Massachusetts and ordered to report on June 5, 2010 to serve his sentence at a prison facility to be designated by the Bureau of Prisons. Approximately a week before the reporting date, DUONG cut off his electronic monitoring bracelet, left his residence and went to Canada, failing to report to prison on June 5, 2010 as ordered.
Judge Woodlock scheduled sentencing for September 16, 2010. DUONG faces up to 10 years imprisonment, to be followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark J. Balthazard of Ortiz’s Economic Crimes Unit.
