BOSTON MAN SENTENCED TO 66 MONTHS FOR GUN POSSESSION
BOSTON, Mass. - A Boston man was sentenced today in federal court for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz, Eugenio A. Marquez, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives- Boston Field Division, and Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis, announced today that WILLIAM HENRY OWENS, 24, of Boston, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Douglas P. Woodlock to 66 months’ imprisonment, to be followed by three years of supervised release. OWENS pleaded guilty to a single count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition on February 18, 2010.
At the earlier plea hearing, the prosecutor told the Court that had the case proceeded to trial the Government’s evidence would have proven that, on Sept. 16, 2008, OWENS, who previously had been convicted of a crime punishable by a year in prison, had attempted to sell a .40 caliber pistol to a cooperating informant. Later that day, Boston Police detectives stopped the car OWENS was driving, which was also occupied by his six-year-old daughter. Police searched the car, recovered a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol and six rounds of ammunition and arrested OWENS.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Boston Police Department. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy E. Moran of Ortiz’s Organized Crime Strike Force Unit.
