REVERE MAN SENTENCED TO 2 ½ YEARS CUSTODY FOR MAIL FRAUD
BOSTON, Mass. - A Revere man was sentenced today in federal court for mail fraud arising out of a 2002 arson fire in the North End of Boston.
ALBERT GIORGIO, 57, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge George A. O’Toole to two-and-a-half years imprisonment, to be followed by three years of supervised release and a $4,000 fine. GIORGIO pleaded guilty to mail fraud on October 28, 2010.
Had the case proceeded to trial the Government’s evidence would have proven that on March 8, 2002, GIORGIO’s brother, Steven Giorgio, intentionally set a fire at 64-66 Salem Street in the North End. The fire substantially damaged the property. Albert GIORGIO was one of the owners of the property. Following the fire, Albert GIORGIO became involved in a scheme to defraud the insurance carrier for the Salem Street property. At that time, given the circumstances of the fire, Albert GIORGIO knew that he was not entitled to receive any insurance payments arising out of the damage to the Salem Street property. In furtherance of his scheme to defraud the insurance carrier, at the instruction of Albert GIORGIO, a written demand was sent to the insurance carrier seeking a monetary payment of $362,200 for the damages.
United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz, Guy N. Thomas, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - Boston Field Office and Boston Fire Commissioner Roderick Fraser made the announcement today. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa M. Asiaf and Michael J. Crowley of Ortiz’s Major Crimes Unit.
