SPRINGFIELD MAN SENTENCED TO TEN YEARS IN PRISON FOR DEALING FIREARMS, AMMUNITION AND NARCOTICS
BOSTON, Mass. - A Springfield man receives a 10-year federal prison sentence for dealing firearms, ammunition, and drugs.
Today, U.S. District Judge Michael A. Ponsor sentenced ANGEL ORTIZ, 33, to 10 years, to be followed by six years of supervised release, and forfeiture of $8,238 in cash. In March 2010, Ortiz pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful firearms dealing, four counts of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon and nine counts of possession with the intent to distribute and distribution of controlled substances.
Had the case proceeded to trial the Government’s evidence would have proven that between September 2009 and October 2009, Ortiz engaged in a series of sales of firearms, ammunition and narcotics - including heroin and cocaine - to an undercover officer working with the Massachusetts State Police.
United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz; Glenn N. Anderson, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives’ Boston Field Division; Massachusetts State Police Colonel Marian J. McGovern; and Springfield Police Commissioner William Fitchet made the announcement today. They case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven H. Breslow of Ortiz’s Springfield Branch Office.
