BOSTON, Mass. - A New Bedford man was arrested on federal gun charges for possessing unregistered firearms.

Rembrandt Escoto, 23, of New Bedford, is charged with possession of firearms that were not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.

According to the complaint affidavit, on or about January 12, 2010, Escoto met with a cooperating witness (CW) working with the government, and sold the CW three sawed-off shotguns. The shotguns that Escoto sold to the CW were not registered to Escoto in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.

If convicted, Escoto faces up to10 years in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release.

United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz; Bruce Foucart, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Office of Homeland Security Investigations in Boston; Guy Thomas, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - Boston Field Office; and Chief David Provencher of the New Bedford Police Department made the announcement today. The case is being prosecuted by prosecutors in Ortiz’s Organized Crime and Gang Unit.

The details contained in the complaint are allegations. The defendant is
presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of
law.
