CHIROPRACTOR SENTENCED FOR NOT FILING INCOME TAX RETURNS

Wednesday, May 4, 2011

BOSTON, Mass. - A Millis woman was sentenced today in federal court for failing to file federal income tax returns from 2005 through 2008.

LISA B. WOOD, 58, of Millis was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael A. Ponsor to nine months of home confinement, 200 hours of community service and four years of probation. She was also ordered to pay $57,538 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). WOOD pleaded guilty to four counts of failure to file tax returns on November 22, 2010.

At the earlier plea hearing, the prosecutor told the Court that had the case proceeded to trial, the Government’s evidence would have proven that WOOD, a chiropractor with offices in Florence and Holliston, failed to file her federal income tax returns from 2005 through 2008. The prosecutor told the court that WOOD earned gross income in those years in excess of $175,000 and owed the IRS taxes for those years. The prosecutor also told the court that the evidence would have shown that WOOD was sophisticated and well aware of her obligation to file her income tax returns as demonstrated by her earlier use of offshore bank accounts and her possession of tax protester literature.

United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and William P. Offord, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service's Criminal Investigation - Boston Field Office made the announcement today. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen L. Goodwin of Ortiz’s Springfield Branch Office.
