Boston - A Groton man was sentenced today in federal court for failing to pay payroll taxes collected from his employees.
U.S. District Judge Patti B. Saris sentenced William E. Belleville, 58, to 18 months in prison to be followed by one year of supervised release, and $460,000 in restitution. On April 10, 2012, Belleville pleaded guilty to conspiracy and tax evasion charges.
Belleville was the former owner of a paving and plowing company, Mass. Paving. From 1993 to 2006, he withheld payroll and income taxes from his employees’ wages, but failed to pay those sums, totaling approximately $460,000, to the Internal Revenue Service.
United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and William P. Offord, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation - Boston Field Division, made the announcement today. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lori J. Holik of Ortiz’s Economic Crimes Unit and Trial Attorney Sean Delaney of the United States Department of Justice, Tax Division.
