Springfield Man Indicted on Federal Firearms Charges

Boston - A Springfield man was charged today in federal court on a number of firearms charges.

Lavon Pemberton, 24, was charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

The indictment alleges that on June 15, 2012, Pemberton, who is a convicted felon, possessed a Taurus .357 magnum firearm with an obliterated serial number and six rounds of .38 caliber ammunition.

If convicted, Pemberton faces up to 10 years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and Guy N. Thomas, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, Boston Field Division, made the announcement today. The case was investigated by the ATF in Springfield and the Springfield Police Department. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin O’Regan of Ortiz’s Springfield Office.

The details contained in the indictment are allegations. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
