Springfield Man Convicted of Illegally Possessing Firearm

BOSTON - A Springfield man was convicted Friday in federal court of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Jaame Salaam, 30, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge William G. Young to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. In the early morning hours of July 12, 2011, in Springfield's Magazine Park, Salaam was in possession of a 9mm pistol and ammunition after having previously been convicted of a felony offense.

Judge Young scheduled sentencing for Dec. 5, 2012. Salaam faces up to 10 years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz; Guy N. Thomas, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - Boston Field Division; Commissioner William Fitchet of the Springfield Police Department made the announcement. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alex J. Grant of Ortiz’s Springfield Branch.
