Frederick Man Exiled to 12 Years in Prison for Selling Crack

Greenbelt, Maryland - U.S. District Judge Roger W. Titus sentenced John Hamilton Kaine, age 28, of Frederick, Maryland, today to 12 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release for distributing cocaine base, known as crack. Judge Titus enhanced Kaine’s sentence upon finding that he is a career offender based on three previous drug convictions.

The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; Acting Special Agent in Charge Marino F. Vidoli of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - Baltimore Field Division; Chief J. Thomas Manger of the Montgomery County Police Department; and Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy.

According to his plea agreement, on April 1, 2011 Montgomery County police officers who were in the area of Germantown Road and Wisteria Drive in Germantown, Maryland saw Kaine engage in two drug transactions. After Kaine got into a car and drove away, the officers stopped the car. Kaine tried to flee and during the ensuing foot chase, threw away a plastic bag containing 30 wrapped pieces of crack totaling 12.67 grams. Kaine was arrested and the plastic bag filled with crack was recovered.

United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended the ATF, Montgomery County Police Department and Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office for their work in this investigation and prosecution. Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant United States Attorney Mara Zusman Greenberg and Special Assistant United States Attorney Peter A. Feeney, who prosecuted the case.
