Glen Burnie Man Pleads Guilty to Two Armed Bank Robberies
Baltimore, Maryland - Joel Travis Nunnally, age 28, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, pleaded guilty today to armed bank robbery, announced United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein.
According to the plea agreement, on June 8, 2007, Nunnally entered the Bank of America at 5211 East Drive, in Baltimore, wearing a dark-colored ski mask and gloves and carrying a shotgun. Nunnally approached two tellers, pointed the shotgun at each of them, and demanded money, stealing approximately $2,224.
In the same manner, on August 6, 2007, Nunnally robbed the Wachovia Bank at 7846 Quarterfield Road, in Severn, Maryland. While in the bank, Nunnally pointed the shotgun at a bank teller and ordered him to place money in the white grocery bag that Nunnally handed to him, then approached another teller, “racked” the shotgun in her face, and demanded more money. Nunnally took approximately $2,816 and was seen leaving the bank in a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo with the license plate covered with brown paper.
Once Nunnally left the bank, a description of his vehicle was broadcast and an Anne Arundel County Police Department detective spotted Nunnally’s vehicle. The detective followed Nunnally to a hotel in Howard County, Maryland and when he approached Nunnally’s car saw Nunnally disassembling the shotgun. Also found in the car were shotgun shells, a dark-colored ski mask, a white plastic grocery bag, the gloves worn during both robberies, and the money taken from the Wachovia Bank.
Nunnally faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison for bank robbery and a minimum of seven years and a maximum of life in prison for use of a firearm in a crime of violence, to be served consecutive to any other sentence. U.S. District Judge William M. Nickerson has scheduled sentencing for April 10, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein praised the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Anne Arundel County Police Department and Baltimore County Police Department for their investigative work. Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney Tonya Kelly Kowitz, who is prosecuting the case.
