Red Lake man pleads guilty to assaulting a woman with a shovel

MINNEAPOLIS—Earlier today in federal court, a 26-year-old Red Lake man pleaded guilty to assaulting a woman on the Red Lake Indian Reservation. Myron Lee Jones, Jr., pleaded guilty to one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Jones, who was indicted on March 20, 2012, entered his plea before United States District Court Chief Judge Michael J. Davis.
In his plea agreement, Jones admitted that on August 23, 2009, he swung a shovel during a fight that involved a number of young adults. He struck the female victim in the back of the head, prompting approximately 20 interior and exterior stitches.
For his crime, Jones faces a potential maximum penalty of ten years in prison. Judge Davis will determine his sentence at a future hearing, yet to be scheduled. This case is the result of an investigation by the Red Lake Tribal Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Deidre Y. Aanstad.
Because the Red Lake Indian Reservation is a federal-jurisdiction reservation, some of the crimes that occur there are investigated by the FBI in conjunction with the Red Lake Tribal Police Department. Those cases are prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
