KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Beth Phillips, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Brooklyn, New York, man was indicted by a federal grand jury today for his role in a conspiracy to sell counterfeit purses and other items.

            Mamadou A. Diallo, 52, of New York, was charged in an indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Kansas City, Mo.

            Today’s indictment alleges that Diallo participated in a conspiracy to traffic in counterfeit goods bearing trademarks from Burberry, Coach, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Dooney & Bourke, Ed Hardy, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada and other designers from November 2007 to September 2009.

            The indictment alleges that Diallo supplied counterfeit goods to dealers in Parkville, Mo., and elsewhere, who then sold them at prices far below the retail value of the genuine goods. Diallo allegedly shipped the goods via UPS from New York. Between November 2007 and January 2009, the indictment says, Diallo received more than $173,000 in money orders as payment for hundreds of counterfeit designer purses, shoes, wristlets, sunglasses and other items.

            Phillips cautioned that the charge contained in this indictment is simply an accusation, and not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting the charge must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.

            This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jess E. Michaelsen. It was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department.
