KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Beth Phillips, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Kansas City, Mo., man was sentenced in federal court today for failing to register as a sex offender.

Jerry Goodman, Jr., 43, of Kansas City-North, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays to five years in federal prison without parole.

On Oct. 13, 2010, Goodman pleaded guilty to failing to register as a sex offender. Goodman was convicted in Oklahoma on June 6, 2002, of indecent or lewd acts with a child under the age of 16. According to police reports, Goodman attempted to touch the breast of a 15-year-old girl.

Goodman was sentenced to a 10-year suspended sentence (with five years served concurrent with parole revocations in other cases) and ordered to register as a sex offender. After his release from prison in Oklahoma, Goodman moved to Kansas, where he registered with Sedgwick County, Kan., authorities and continued to mail verification forms to the sheriff’s department through March 31, 2009. However, Goodman failed to report in person as required under Kansas law.

On Sept. 5, 2008, Goodman was arrested in Kansas on outstanding warrants, including failure to register as a sex offender in connection with his failure to report in-person to the sheriff’s department. Goodman was charged with nine counts of failure to register as a sex offender.

In November 2009, law enforcement officers learned that Goodman had been living in Kansas City, Mo., since approximately May 2009. Goodman was arrested in Clay County, Mo., on Nov. 2, 2009, for stealing. Records from both the Clay and Platte County, Mo., Sheriffs’ Departments confirm that Goodman has never registered in Missouri as a sex offender.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Dan Nelson. It was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service.
