Michael W. Cotter Sworn In As United States Attorney
On Wednesday, December 30, 2009, Michael W. Cotter, 60, was sworn in as the 39th United States Attorney for the District of Montana, by Federal District Court Judge Charles C. Lovell, in Helena, Montana. Cotter replaces William W. Mercer as U.S. Attorney.
Cotter received his law degree from the University of Notre Dame. He is married to Patricia Cotter, a Montana Supreme Court Justice, and has two children. Cotter has been a private attorney in Helena and Great Falls for over thirty years. His practice focused on complex civil and criminal cases.
I look forward to working with the attorneys and staff in the U.S. Attorney's Office as we serve the citizens of Montana, protecting its people from crime and representing the United States in civil cases. I appreciate the assistance Bill Mercer has extended during this transition and I wish him the best in his future endeavors."
Cotter was nominated by President Obama in September 2009 and confirmed by unanimous consent by the U.S. Senate on December 24, 2009.
