The United States Attorney's Office announced that during a federal court session in Great Falls, on January 23, 2012, before U.S. District Judge Sam E. Haddon, HIRAM EVANS, a 28-year-old resident of Heart Butte, appeared for sentencing. EVANS was sentenced to a term of:

Prison: 27 months

Special Assessment: $100

Supervised Release: 3 years

EVANS was sentenced in connection with his guilty plea to assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

In an Offer of Proof filed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura B. Weiss, the government stated it would have proved at trial the following:

On January 22, 2011, several individuals were drinking alcohol at a home in Heart Butte, located within the exterior boundaries of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. The victim went to a back room to sleep. The victim woke to EVANS punching him in the head. A wrestle ensued, during which another individual became involved, knocking the victim to the ground.

The victim attempted to leave the house but was repeatedly kicked and beaten by EVANS and another individual. The victim was taken to the emergency room, but his injuries were so severe that he had to be air lifted to Kalispell. The victim's injuries

Because there is no parole in the federal system, the "truth in sentencing" guidelines mandate that EVANS will likely serve all of the time imposed by the court. In the federal system, EVANS does have the opportunity to earn a sentence reduction for "good behavior." However, this reduction will not exceed 15% of the overall sentence.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
