U. S. JUSTICE DEPARTMENT AWARDS $745,125 TO N. C. JUSTICE DEPARTMENT FOR TELEMARKETING REFORM

RALEIGH - United States Attorney Frank D. Whitney said that the U. S. Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs (OJP) has announced a $745,125 grant to the North Carolina Department of Justice to be used for telemarketing reform. The grant will be administered by North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper and used for "The North Carolina Telemarketing Fraud Enforcement and Privacy Protection Project." This grant was awarded under the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968.

According to OJP, "The North Carolina Telemarketing Fraud Enforcement and Privacy Protection Project will have two major components, both dealing with issues of telemarketing. The first issue is the prevention of telemarketing fraud. The second is the reduction of intrusive, sometimes deceptive and illegal, telemarketing activities that impair citizens' ability to enjoy the privacy of their own homes."
