NEW BERN - United States Attorney Frank D. Whitney announced that the newest Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) site in the Eastern District of North Carolina will be located in the City of New Bern and Craven County. The PSN task force, code-named"OPERATION ZERO TOLERANCE," will include the U. S. Attorney's Office, the Craven County District Attorney's Office, the New Bern Police Department, the Craven County Sheriff's Office, the Havelock Police Department, the Trent Woods Police Department, and the North Carolina Probation and Parole Office. Project Safe Neighborhoods is a Presidential initiative to reduce gun violence in communities throughout the nation. In the Eastern District of North Carolina, which is comprised of the 44 easternmost counties of the state, there are currently six other Project Safe Neighborhoods sites. These sites are located in Raleigh, Wilmington, Fayetteville, Greenville, Johnston County, and Lumberton. Community and law enforcement partnerships, which include the United States Attorney's Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), local police departments, local sheriff's offices, state and federal probation offices, local District Attorney's offices, local Magistrates, various rehabilitative resource programs, and area churches have been formed in all six PSN sites.
