NORTH CAROLINA MAN RECEIVES 30-YEAR SENTENCE FOR INTERSTATE TRANSPORTATION OF 12-YEAR-OLD WITH CRIMINAL SEXUAL INTENT

RALEIGH - Acting United States Attorney George E. B. Holding announced Monday’s sentencing in a child sexual abuse case brought by the United States. On July 10, 2006, in Raleigh, N. C., United States District Judge James C. Dever sentenced PHILLIP DANIEL DENKLER, age 28, of Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

DENKLER was sentenced on his guilty pleas to the interstate transportation of a 12-year-old girl with the intent that the girl engage in sexual activity with him, and the interstate transportation of a stolen motor vehicle. DENKLER was sentenced to concurrent sentences of 360 months and 120 months, respectively. DENKLER was also sentenced to a lifetime of supervised release by the United States Probation Office upon his release from prison.

Commenting on the sentencing, George E.B. Holding, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, said, "The defendant committed a heinous crime and received an appropriate sentence.”

Investigation of the case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Rocky Mount Police Department, and the Police Department of Des Moines, Iowa. Assistant United States Attorneys Clay C. Wheeler and Dennis M. Duffy prosecuted the case for the United States.
