ARMED CAREER CRIMINAL FOUND GUILTY
NEW BERN - United States Attorney George E.B. Holding announced that yesterday in federal court LEWIS CARNELL JACKSON, 32, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and an Armed Career Criminal, was found guilty by a jury of numerous offenses. JACKSON was convicted of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute marijuana, in violation of Title 21, United States Code, Section 841(a)(1); possession with intent to distribute marijuana, in violation of Title 21, United States Code, Section 841(a)(1); possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c); and felon in possession of a firearm, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g) and 924. JACKSON, who has had previous convictions that include assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, discharging a weapon in occupied property, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of cocaine, and sale and delivery of cocaine, faces not less than 15 years imprisonment nor more than life imprisonment as an Armed Career Criminal. He faces a consecutive 60-month sentence for possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime.
On February 22, 2007, agents with the Raleigh Police Department arranged to make an undercover purchase of marijuana from JACKSON. On that date, JACKSON was arrested at the deal location in possession of 3 pounds of marijuana, a loaded Jennings 9mm handgun and a set of digital scales. On March 24, 2007, after his release on charges, JACKSON was stopped for speeding and subsequently arrested. On that date, JACKSON was in possession of a .380 caliber handgun and marijuana. JACKSON subsequently confessed.
"The citizens on the jury listened to the facts and came to a reasonable conclusion. I am very pleased with their verdict. Because of the importance of keeping our neighborhoods safe, my office will continue to vigorously prosecute recidivist Armed Career Criminals who continue to engage in criminal conduct," stated Mr. Holding.
Investigation of the case was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Raleigh Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Ethan Ontjes served as prosecutor for the government.
