NEW JERSEY MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO FIREARM CHARGE
RALEIGH - United States Attorney George E.B. Holding announced that in federal court yesterday MARLON WILLIAMS, 38, of Elizabeth, New Jersey, pled guilty before United States District Judge James C. Dever, III, to unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924.
A Federal Grand Jury returned a Criminal Indictment on October 28, 2009.
The investigation revealed that on October 12, 2007, a straw purchaser went to the Swop Shop, a federal firearms licensee in Goldsboro, North Carolina, and purchased a .45 caliber pistol. WILLIAMS, a nine-time convicted felon, took possession of the pistol. Four days later, on October 16, 2007, law enforcement in New Jersey recovered the now loaded .45 caliber pistol that had been purchased in North Carolina during a random license checkpoint.
At sentencing, scheduled for October 4, 2010, WILLIAMS faces up to 10 years' imprisonment followed by up to three years' supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000. If the Court finds that, due to his criminal history, a sentencing enhancement is applicable, WILLIAMS could face up to a life-term of imprisonment followed by up to five years' supervised release.
This case is part of this office's "Iron Pipeline" effort that is focusing on the disruption of the flow of firearms from North Carolina to New Jersey and New York.
This case was part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative which encourages federal, state, and local agencies to cooperate in a unified “team effort” against gun crime, targeting repeat offenders who continually plague their communities.
Investigation of this case was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the New Jersey State Police. Assistant United States Attorney Jane Jackson represented the government.
