FORT BRAGG STAFF SERGEANT RECEIVES SENTENCE IN GOVERNMENT FRAUD CASE

RALEIGH - United States Attorney Thomas G. Walker announced that in federal court today United States District Judge Terrence W. Boyle sentenced JASON M. JONES, 34, of Raeford, North Carolina to six months community confinement followed by three years supervised release. The Court also imposed restitution in the amount of $65,253.88.

On June 29, 2011, a Federal Grand Jury returned a Criminal Indictment charging JONES. On October 23, 2011, JONES pled guilty to conspiring to defraud the United States by obtaining payment through false, fictitious and fraudulent claims, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 286.

According to the Indictment, from April, 2009, to April, 2010, JONES, along with co-conspirators, submitted false and inflated travel claims. The proceeds were deposited into personal bank accounts. JONES submitted false travel vouchers for travel that had not occurred or by intentionally inflating expenses for travel that had occurred.

Investigation of this case was conducted by the United States Army Criminal Investigation Division and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Special Assistant United States Attorney (Captain) Jamal Rhinehardt, with the XVIII Airborne Corps, Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, is prosecuting the case.
