federal sentenced imposed for firearms charge stemming from assault

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 20, 2012

RALEIGH - United States Attorney Thomas G. Walker announced that in federal court yesterday Chief United States District Judge James C. Dever III, sentenced KIMBLE DWEESE JONES, 55, of Clinton, North Carolina, to 210 months imprisonment followed by five years supervised release.
A Federal Grand Jury returned a Criminal Indictment on July 5, 2011. On March 13, 2012, JONES pled guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924.

According to evidence presented in court, on January 21, 2011, JONES was assaulting his girlfriend outside of a restaurant on McPherson Church Road in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and continued to assault her as he drove through Fayetteville. A witness, seeing the assault at one point, notified authorities. Officers located and stopped the vehicle. Upon stopping, the vehicle officers recovered a loaded Winchester Model 24, double- barreled, 12-gauge shotgun under the driver’s seat.

This case was part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative which encourages federal, state, and local agencies to cooperate in a unified “team effort” against gun crime, targeting repeat offenders who continually plague their communities.

JONES’ criminal history includes breaking and entering, assault inflicting serious injury, second degree kidnaping, discharging a firearm into an occupied property, assault on a female and two convictions of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Investigation of this case was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Fayetteville Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Jane J. Jackson is prosecuting the case.
