ELIZABETH CITY - United States Attorney Thomas G. Walker announced that in federal court yesterday JOHN DAVID HERRON, 31, pled guilty to receipt of child pornography, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2252(a)(2).  United States District Judge Terrence W. Boyle presided over the hearing.

A 2011 Cary police investigation revealed that a user, later identified as HERRON, was sharing files containing child pornography using peer-to-peer technology.  The IP address was traced to HERRON’s residence and on June 29, 2011, a search warrant was executed and child pornography quickly identified.  A subsequent forensic examination of HERRON’s computer equipment revealed that HERRON had amassed a collection of over 4,000 images and approximately 500 videos of child pornography. 

At sentencing, HERRON faces up to 20 years imprisonment. 

This case was part of the Project Safe Childhood initiative, a national program aimed at ensuring that criminals exploiting children are effectively prosecuted by making full use of all available law enforcement resources at every level.  For more information about this important national project, Project Safe Childhood, go to www.projectsafechildhood.gov.
