RALEIGH - United States Attorney Thomas G. Walker announced that in federal court today KIMBLE DWEESE JONES, 55, of Clinton, North Carolina, pled guilty before United States Magistrate Judge James E. Gates to unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924.

According to the Criminal Indictment returned on July 5, 2011, JONES was found in possession of a Winchester Model 24, 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition.  According to the investigation, on January 21, 2011, JONES was assaulting his girlfriend outside of a restaurant on McPherson Road in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and continued to assault her as he drove through Fayetteville.  A witness, seeing the assault at one point, notified authorities. Officers located and stopped the vehicle.  Upon stopping, the vehicle officers recovered a loaded Winchester Model 24, double- barreled, shotgun under the driver’s  seat.

This case was part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative which encourages federal, state, and local agencies to cooperate in a unified “team effort” against gun crime, targeting repeat offenders who continually plague their communities.

At sentencing, set for June 18, 2012, JONES faces up to 10 years imprisonment followed by up to three years supervised release.  If he is deemed to be an Armed Career Criminal, because of his extensive criminal history, he faces up to a life term of imprisonment followed by up to five years supervised release.  His criminal history includes breaking and entering, assault inflicting serious injury, second degree kidnaping, discharging a firearm into an occupied property, assault on a female and two convictions of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Investigation of this case was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Fayetteville Police Department.  Assistant United States Attorney Jane J. Jackson is prosecuting the case.
