Durham Resident Sentenced For Failing To File Federal Income Tax Return
Greensboro, NC – Anna Mills Wagoner, United States Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina, announced that CHERYL MELIONES, from Durham, North Carolina, was sentenced in federal court in Greensboro on May 19, 2010, by United States District Court Judge N. Carlton Tilley, to 6 months imprisonment, to be followed by 18 months probation, and fined $4,000.00.
MELIONES was charged on October 28, 2009, with three counts of failing to file a federal income tax return for the tax years 2004, 2005 and 2006. On November 5, 2009, MELIONES pled guilty to count three of the indictment. Count three charged that MELIONES had taxable income for the 2006 tax year of $596,100.00 and that she willfully failed to file a return even though she had an obligation to do so.
By voluntarily pleading guilty, MELIONES waived her right to trial.
Special Agent in Charge for the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation Division, Jeannine A. Hammett, stated “It is important that honest, taxpaying citizens know that IRS-CI is working diligently to ensure they are not bearing the burden of someone else’s tax liability. IRS-CI will aggressively pursue those who willfully fail to file their tax returns.” Investigation of this case was conducted by Special Agents for the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation Division.
