Offense Draws 36 Month Sentence, Lifetime Supervised Release

Greensboro, N.C. – United States Attorney Ripley Rand announced that a New Jersey man has been sentenced to 36 months in prison and supervised release for life for failure to register as a sex offender.

William Dennis Riker, 35, formerly of Blairstown, New Jersey, had pleaded guilty to failure to register as a sex offender, which is a federal crime when interstate relocation is involved.  On January 19, 2012, Riker was sentenced by United States District Judge Thomas D. Schroeder to 36 months in prison, followed by lifetime supervised release.

Riker had been convicted on March 24, 2000, of aggravated sexual assault and sexual assault in New Jersey Superior Court and sentenced to seven years imprisonment.  Riker was arrested on February 16, 2010, for parole violations in Butler, New Jersey, after he removed his GPS monitoring device. Riker made bond and again absconded from supervision. Investigators developed information that Riker was living in Pinebluff, North Carolina. On October 12, 2010, Riker evaded capture after law enforcement officers tracked him to a residence in Pinebluff. Riker was apprehended in late October, 2010, in New Jersey.

The case was investigated by the United States Marshals Service and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Anand P. Ramaswamy.

Riker was prosecuted under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), also known as the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act, which was enacted in 2006.
