Passaic county, n.J. woman sentenced to 19 months in prison for defrauding IRS by preparing false tax returns

NEWARK, N.J. – A Paterson, N.J., woman was sentenced today to 19 months in prison for preparing numerous false individual income tax returns on behalf of her clients in Paterson, N.J., resulting in a significant tax loss to the IRS, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.
Jane Beasley, 53, previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Esther Salas to an Information charging her with aiding and assisting in the preparation and presentation of a false 2008 individual income return. Judge Salas also imposed the sentence today in Newark federal court.
According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court:
From 2006 through April 2010, Beasley owned and operated JB’s Tax & Bookkeeping Services, a tax preparation business in Paterson. In each of the tax years 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009, Beasley prepared false tax returns for her clients by fabricating and inflating itemized deductions for medical expenses, charitable contributions, and unreimbursed business expenses, in order for her clients to obtain larger refunds than they were entitled to receive. Beasley defrauded U.S. taxpayers of at least $116,612.
In addition to the prison term, Judge Salas sentenced Beasley to two years of supervised release, during which time she is prohibited from working as a tax preparer.
U.S. Attorney Fishman credited special agents of IRS–Criminal Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge JoAnn S. Zuniga, with the investigation leading to today’s sentence.
