Dentist sentenced to prison, home confinement for failing to file income tax returns

NEWARK, N.J. – A dentist with a private practice in Clifton, N.J., was sentenced today to five months in prison and five months of home confinement for failing to file his 2005 and 2006 federal income tax returns, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.

Gary J. Tashjian, 66, of Essex Fells, N.J., previously pleaded guilty to Count One of a two-count Information charging him with failing to file his 2005 federal income tax return. He also admitted to failing to file his 2006 federal income tax return. Tashjian entered his guilty plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael A. Shipp, who also imposed the sentence today in Newark federal court.

According documents filed in this case and statements made in court:

During calendar year 2005, Tashjian earned gross income of $70,622 and failed to file a federal income tax return for that year before the filing deadline of Oct. 15, 2006. During calendar year 2006, Tashjian earned gross income of $126,489 and failed to file a federal income tax return before the filing deadline of Oct. 15, 2007.

In addition to the prison term and home confinement with electronic monitoring, Judge Shipp sentenced Tashjian to one year of supervised release and ordered him to pay a $3,000 fine.

U.S. Attorney Fishman credited special agents of IRS-Criminal Investigation, under the direction of Acting Special Agent in Charge JoAnn S. Zuniga, with the investigation.

The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Shirley U. Emehelu of the Economic Crimes Unit in Newark.
