Serial Bank Robber Pleads Guilty
Las Vegas, Nev. – A man who robbed multiple banks in the Las Vegas area between May and July 2006, pleaded guilty today to seven counts of Bank Robbery, announced Daniel G. Bogden, United States Attorney for the District of Nevada.
Jeffery Robert Vanhorne, age 31, of Las Vegas, entered his guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Kent J. Dawson. Vanhorne admitted that he robbed seven banks of a total of approximately $10,000, and that he used force and violence or intimidation. The monies were insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
The banks and their locations were:
- Bank of America at 4361 North Rancho, Las Vegas;
- Nevada State Bank in Smith's Supermarket at 4700 West Ann Road, North Las Vegas;
- Bank of America at 1930 Village Center Circle, Las Vegas;
- U.S. Bank at 4015 South Buffalo, Las Vegas;
- U.S. Bank in Von's Supermarket at 820 South Rampart, Las Vegas;
- Nevada State Bank at 1421 North Jones, Las Vegas; and
- Nevada State Bank in Smith's Supermarket at 4440 North Rancho Drive, Las Vegas.
In each robbery, Vanhorne entered the bank, gave a teller a note, and demanded money. In three of the robberies, Vanhorne told the teller that he had a gun and not to try any tricks. Shortly after the last robbery, law enforcement officers tracked Vanhorne to a shed where he had been hiding and placed him under arrest.
Vanhorne was indicted by the Federal Grand Jury on July 26, 2006, and charged with seven counts of bank robbery. He pleaded guilty to all charges. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each charge, and is scheduled to be sentenced on December 20, 2006, at 9:00 a.m.
The case was investigated by the FBI and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Amber M. Craig.
