Felon Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for Federal Firearms Offenses

Las Vegas, Nev. – A man with an extensive criminal history in several states has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison following his guilty pleas to federal firearms offenses, announced Greg Brower, United States Attorney for the District of Nevada.

Dennis Moncrief, 44, of Las Vegas, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Philip M. Pro on September 17, 2008, to 15 years in prison and five years of supervised release. He pleaded guilty in March 2008 to one count of Felon in Possession of Firearms and one count of Possession of Stolen Firearms.

In June 2007, Moncrief was arrested by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Officers for the burglary of several Las Vegas residences during which multiple guns, ammunition, credit cards, and electronic items were stolen. During the execution of several search warrants, officers recovered four handguns and two rifles from Moncrief's storage unit on East Sunset Road in Las Vegas; ammunition and credit cards from Moncrief's vehicle, and a handgun and electronic equipment from his residence. Officers determined that all of the items recovered had been stolen during the burglaries.

Moncrief was subject to a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of not less than 15 years because he has at least three prior felony convictions which were considered violent Moncrief has multiple prior felony convictions in Nevada, Colorado, and Tennessee.

The case was investigated by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kathleen Bliss.
