Felon Sentenced to Almost 10 Years in Prison for Possessing Firearms

Las Vegas, Nev. – A convicted felon who was found in possession of several firearms, stolen goods, and methamphetamine, has been sentenced to 9½ years in federal prison for his jury conviction on federal firearm charges, announced Daniel G. Bogden, United States Attorney for the District of Nevada.

Brett Combs, 31, of Reno, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Kent J. Dawson on February 1, 2012, to 115 months in prison, four years of which was ordered served consecutively to a state court sentence that Combs was serving for possession of stolen property. Combs was convicted by a jury of felon in possession of a firearm charges on April 27, 2011.

On January 8, 2009, Nevada Parole and Probation Officers went to Combs' residence in Las Vegas to conduct a home visit. The officers had received information that Combs, who was on parole for a burglary and gun conviction, intended to take part in the robbery of an armored vehicle on January 8, 2009. Combs was taken into custody at the residence. The officers then searched the residence and found three firearms, approximately $400,000 worth of jewelry and narcotics paraphernalia, and approximately 45 grams of methamphetamine. The jewelry and narcotics paraphernalia were traced back to two armed robberies that took place in Colorado in 2008, which led to his conviction for possession of stolen property in state court. Officers also recovered another firearm, several thousand rounds of ammunition, and numerous ammunition cans in a storage shed on Ft. Apache Road that belonged to Combs and his girlfriend at the time.

Combs has prior felony convictions in Clark County, Nevada, for burglary and ex-felon in possession of a firearm.

The case was investigated by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and ATF, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Cristina D. Silva and Eric Johnson.
